JDC West

About

JDC West is Western Canada’s largest business competition, bringing together twelve universities and over 600 students, faculty members, and established industry professionals. In January 2018, Sauder JDC West will be sending 46 competitors to Calgary to compete in various academic, athletic, social and debate challenges. All schools compete for the coveted title of School of the Year, which reflects the all-around excellence of a school’s participation and performance. In 2016, the Sauder JDC West team had the honour of being named School of the Year, and in 2017, Academic School of the Year.
Team Composition:
Academic
Comprised of 10 three-person academic teams classified by business designation. Within a three-hour time-span, teams must develop a case analysis and deliver a 20-minute presentation to a panel of judges. Our average academic competitor belongs to the top fifth percentile within the faculty of Commerce for outstanding academic achievement and notable work experience.
Teams by discipline: Accounting, Business Strategy, Business Technology
Management, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources, International
Business, Marketing, Not-For- Profit Business Strategy, and Taxation.
Athletic
Comprised of an eight-person co-ed team. Teams train to compete in this year’s two featured sports -Quidditch and Tchoukball. Our athletes are tested in mental resilience, team work, and physical ability.

Debate
Comprised of four members. Teams prepare their argument for any given business topic within a 30-minute time span. Using Canadian Parliamentary style, teams assume the role of either Team Government and Team Opposition as they battle it out in 42-minute rounds.
Social

Comprised of two males and two females. The social aspect of JDC West is entirely unique, and is often described as Survivor meets the Amazing Race meets Fear Factor. The purpose of the social team is described as being the “heartbeat” of JDC West. They work to unite and support team members using creative methods. Their 10 challenges take place randomly throughout the two-day competition.
